Alexander Mordvintsev (b. 1985) is a Russian-born researcher and artist based in Zurich. A graduate of ITMO University, he joined Google in 2014, initially as a software engineer, before moving into research. In 2015, his experiments with image-recognition networks led to DeepDream, a feature-visualisation technique that amplified patterns learned by a trained convolutional neural network and made the network's internal visual associations dramatically visible. Developed within Google and subsequently presented publicly with Christopher Olah and Mike Tyka, DeepDream became one of the most widely recognised early examples of neural-network image-making. Mordvintsev's later research has extended into neural cellular automata, self-organising systems and artificial life. His work has been presented at venues including the Barbican Centre, Gray Area, and Kate Vass Galerie.
