Casey Reas is an American artist and educator whose practice explores software, generative systems, moving image and the relationship between computation and visual culture. In 2001, together with Ben Fry, he co-founded Processing, the open-source programming language and environment that became foundational to creative coding and generative art. Reas is Professor of Design Media Arts at UCLA and co-director of UCLA Social Software. His work is held in collections including the Centre Pompidou and SFMOMA, and has been exhibited at institutions including the Whitney Museum, LACMA, the V&A and UCCA. Since the late 2010s, his practice has also engaged machine learning and GAN-based image-making, extending his long-standing investigation of systems, rules and image construction.
