Holly Herndon (US) and Mat Dryhurst (UK) are Berlin-based artists and musicians who have collaborated since 2013 on work spanning albums, protocols and machine-learning systems, including the AI voice ensemble Spawn and Holly+, a 'digital twin' instrument that lets anyone perform with Herndon's machine-learned voice. Herndon holds a PhD from Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, and the duo's albums include Platform (2015) and PROTO (2019). Through their organization Spawning they built haveibeentrained.com, tools that let artists opt in to or out of AI training datasets, and their recent exhibitions include xhairymutantx at the 2024 Whitney Biennial and The Call at Serpentine, London.
