Mike Tyka is an artist and scientist who studied biochemistry at the University of Bristol, earned a PhD in biophysics in 2007, and researched protein folding at the University of Washington before joining Google in Seattle in 2012. He co-authored the seminal 2015 article "Inceptionism: Going Deeper into Neural Networks" that introduced DeepDream, created some of the first large-scale DeepDream artworks, and co-founded Google's Artists and Machine Intelligence program. His 2017 series "Portraits of Imaginary People" was an early artistic exploration of GAN-generated portraiture. He also makes cast-glass and bronze sculptures of protein molecules and co-founded the ALTSpace art studio in Seattle.
