Obvious is a Paris-based collective of artists and researchers founded in 2017 by Hugo Caselles-Dupré, Pierre Fautrel, and Gauthier Vernier (all born 1993), who build artificial-intelligence algorithms and use them to produce artworks. Their GAN portrait "Edmond de Belamy" sold for $432,500 at Christie's New York in October 2018 - the first artwork made with AI to pass through a major auction house - igniting a global debate about authorship and machine creativity. The trio were also among the first French artists to mint NFTs, in 2018, and today run a research laboratory hosted at Sorbonne University, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), pursuing image, video, and sound generation. Their work has been shown at institutions including the Hermitage Museum, the National Art Museum of China, and Haus der Kunst.
