Rare Pepes emerged on Bitcoin in 2016 as a community-driven collection of digital cards created and traded through the Counterparty protocol. Produced by numerous pseudonymous artists and accepted through the Rare Pepe Directory, the project became one of the formative experiments in blockchain-native art, establishing an early model for verifiable digital scarcity, collecting and peer-to-peer cultural production. The cards held in this collection, by Looks Rare and Alex Green, are among the earliest AI artworks on the Bitcoin blockchain: neural style transfer and DeepDream pieces from 2015-2017, traded as Counterparty (XCP) assets.
